Campus Construction Activity Update
The redirect
Spring 2000
Moving through Session 2 2000, the activity focus is:
Building K17
The lull in construction is over for K17. The occupants of the three associated projects (Graduate Programs in Business and Technology, Level 3 Electrical Engineering and Geomatic Engineering, Level 4 Electrical Engineering) have all relocated, freeing up Levels 3, 4 and 5 of K17. Both Levels 3 and 4 Electrical Engineering are still being fitted with some items such as fume cupboards, unprocurable during the fitout period.
To minimise disruption, demolition was focussed to coincide with the Olympic period. The Stage 2 occupation will occur during the late January/mid February period 2001.
The K17 landscaped garden will not be open for use until January 2001 to allow the turf to be established. This will coincide with the planned official opening and naming of the garden.
The K17 construction zone is being managed as a joint site with the Mall works. There is a separate site for the construction update at http://www.unsw.edu.au/unsw2000/sup_campconst.html.
Covered Links, Library Level 1 and Law Entry, Civil Engineering Foyer
The work is being finalised.
Mall Unfinished Works
The work focus has transferred to the area between Scientia and Engineering Road and this site is in full swing with a large area closed to access and alternative routing of pedestrians and vehicles in place. The noisy services tunnel link excavation was given a major push during the Olympics break.
See site http://www.unsw.edu.au/unsw2000/sup_campconst.html.
for project specific updates.
Western Campus
The demolition of the old Parade Theatre and huts is complete, along with excavation and associated works. The main contract is now let and construction is commencing.
Special Research Centre for Quantum Computer Technology
This new space on the second floor of the Newton Building is up and running for a visit by a potential joint venture partner from the USA. The Centre will be officially opened by Senator The Hon. Richard Alston, Minister for Communications, Information Technology and the Arts.
